A tear of the anterior cruciate ligament, the ligament that stops the knee shifting forwards and twisting.
What it usually feels like
- A pop at the moment of injury
- Rapid swelling within hours
- A knee that feels unstable when turning

- Twisting or landing awkwardly in sport
- A direct blow to the knee
- Sudden change of direction

Do not wait
When to be seen urgently
- A grossly swollen knee straight after injury
- The knee gives way when walking
