Treatments

Hip

Hip pain, arthritis and replacement — including anterior minimally invasive surgery.

A worn or damaged hip usually announces itself as pain in the groin and stiffness that makes putting on shoes hard. Dr Moagi treats hip arthritis, hip impingement and the injuries that follow a fall.

Procedures Dr Moagi performs

  • Total hip replacement
  • AMIS anterior hip replacement
  • Hip arthroscopy

Deciding on surgery

Surgery is not always the answer

Being honest about when an operation helps, and when it does not, is part of the consultation.

When surgery is usually right

  • Pain wakes you at night or no longer settles with rest and medication
  • X-rays show the joint surface is worn through
  • Walking distance and independence are getting shorter month by month

When it usually is not

  • Pain that responds to physiotherapy and weight management
  • Early wear where an injection or activity change buys good years
  • Pain coming from the back rather than the hip itself

Recovery

What recovery looks like

  • Most patients stand and walk with assistance on the day of surgery or the day after
  • Two to four days in hospital, then physiotherapy at home
  • Driving usually at around six weeks, guided by which side was operated on

These are general timelines. Your own recovery depends on your age, your general health and the specific problem being treated. Dr Moagi will give you your own plan.
