Condition
Hip pain
Pain felt in the groin, the front of the thigh or deep in the buttock, often worse on standing up after sitting.
What it usually feels like
- A deep ache in the groin rather than on the outside of the hip
- Stiffness first thing in the morning that eases as you move
- Difficulty putting on socks, shoes or getting into a car
Common causes
- Wear of the joint surface
- Impingement between the ball and socket
- Tendon irritation around the hip
- Pain referred from the lower back
Treatment
How this is treated
Treatment starts with the least invasive option that is likely to work.
- Step 1
Physiotherapy to restore movement and strength
- Step 2
Anti-inflammatory medication or an injection
- Step 3
Surgery, including hip replacement, when the joint surface is worn through
Do not wait
When to be seen urgently
- You cannot bear weight after a fall
- The hip is hot, swollen and you feel feverish
This page is general health information, not a diagnosis. Only an examination can tell you what is wrong with your joint.
